The Historic Capital of the Algarve
Silves is one of the most fascinating cities in the Algarve and one of the richest in history in the entire Iberian Peninsula. Once the capital of the Moorish kingdom of the Algarve, known as Xelb, Silves was for centuries one of the most important cultural and political centres in southern Iberia. Today, the city preserves that legacy with pride, offering visitors a journey through time via its monuments, streets and traditions.
Just 15 minutes from Casa Sean, Silves is a must-visit for all guests.
🏰 Silves Castle
Silves Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Portugal. Built by the Moors between the 8th and 13th centuries, it dominates the city’s skyline from its highest point. Its reddish sandstone walls are an iconic image of the Algarve. Inside, visitors can explore the Arab cisterns, gardens and enjoy panoramic views over the city and the Algarve countryside.
⛪ Silves Cathedral
Silves Cathedral, also known as the Sé de Silves, is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in the Algarve. Built in the 13th century over a former mosque, the cathedral houses the tombs of crusaders and architectural elements of great historical and artistic value.
🍽️ Gastronomy
Silves is famous for the quality of its gastronomy. Seafood cataplana, grilled sardines, piri-piri chicken and regional pastries are just some of the dishes you cannot miss. The restaurants in the historic centre offer an authentic gastronomic experience at very reasonable prices.
⚔️ The Silves Medieval Fair
Every year in August, Silves transforms into a medieval city during its famous Medieval Fair. This event, one of the largest and most popular in Portugal, recreates daily life in the Moorish era with markets, shows, crafts and gastronomy. A unique experience that attracts visitors from around the world.
🏖️ Nearby Beaches
Despite being an inland city, Silves is just 20–30 minutes from some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, such as Armação de Pêra, Carvoeiro and Ferragudo. The best of both worlds: history and culture during the day, beach and sea in the late afternoon.
